Process

01

At first, I decided to make "shinise" products as my 100 drawings, and I started drawing on a piece of paper. ”Shinise" is one of the important cultures in Japan, which indicates the long-established business that has been operated for more than a hundred years. However, as I drew a couple of products from shinise, I was not satisfied with what I was drawing, so I started to think about what made me happy while drawing.

02

After a lot of thinking, I decided to draw 100 dresses. I was going to hand draw them, but considering the complexity of dresses and efficiency, I chose to use an app called ibisPaint X.

➡️How I found the dresses that I drew :

I found dresses using Google and Pinterest. I searched for dresses in each era and got inspiration from them. Some of them are inspired by famous brands such as Chanel.

03

I used the app on my smartphone, which was a struggle at first, but as I got used to it, it was not a problem. As I drew, I started thinking about categorization, for example, by my emotional status, occasion, time, etc. After discussing with my classmates and figuring out what they knew and did not know about dresses, I decided to categorize them by time period. I decided not to specify the region or the name of styles on purpose so that viewers could focus on visually perceiving the dresses over different time periods.

04

Since I had little knowledge about dresses in different time periods, I used some images from Google and Pinterest and traced them using the app. The most difficult part of drawing dresses was differentiating the colors and textures. So, I explored the app and tried to use as many functions as possible, such as using various brushes. For example, when I wanted to draw sparkly dresses, I used brushes that made sparkly patterns, which was very useful.

Drawing became much easier as I drew, but I was still unsure about the categorization at the very last moment. However, when I talked with some classmates in class, their ways of categorization inspired me.  And I decided to keep the time period concept, but focus more on the historical context. By making the historical context behind the time period apparent, I thought that it would be more effective for the viewer to connect fashion with time.
